Amazon Alexa: now with more CryptoBadger!

If you have an Amazon Echo or other Alexa-enabled device, you can now use it to ask CryptoBadger to fetch the latest cryptocurrency prices. Just say “Alexa, enable CryptoBadger skill” to install my simple plugin, and then you can say things like “Alexa, ask CryptoBadger: what’s the current Bitcoin price?” Prices come from Coinbase, and Ethereum and Litecoin are also supported.

This was my Sunday coding project, and the skill isn’t especially unique or robust—I’m a fan of Amazon’s Alexa and simply wanted to see what was involved in creating a skill. If there is interest, I may expand it to support features like historical prices and wallet balances—feel free to leave ideas and/or feedback in the comments below!

If you don’t already have an Echo, I absolutely recommend one—they’re fantastic devices. Amazon currently has them on sale for $80 off the normal price. The smaller (& less expensive) Echo Dot is also great if you plan to use your own speakers.

Amazon Prime Day Deals

It’s Amazon Prime Day, and that means some pretty nice deals for the next ~24 hours.

I’ll try to keep this post updated below with any mining-related deals that I spot. Note that you’ll need an Amazon Prime membership to access the deals, but you can get a free 30-day trial if you don’t already have one.

TPLink HS100 Smart Plug: $19.99 (I wrote a review of the HS110 recently)

Deal: EVGA 850 watt PSU for $91

Amazon has EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850 watt gold-rated power supplies on sale right now for $91. These are very highly-rated efficient units, and a good choice if you’re looking to build a mining rig composed of 3-4 RX 470 GPUs (PSUs are most efficient when delivering roughly half of their rated maximum power, which puts this unit in the sweet spot for a 3-4 GPU rig).

While this unit is technically capable of powering 6x undervolted RX 470 cards, you’ll be running it near its maximum capacity, which will hurt its effective efficiency quite a bit. I still strongly recommend a 1200+ watt PSU for 6 GPU rigs.

Get $250 back on $500 worth of purchases at Amazon!

Hi readers, I’ve been busy on a couple projects and consequently MIA the past few months. For those of you still visiting the site, I just thought I’d pass along a deal that seems ridiculously good, just in time for the holiday season: apply for a Chase Freedom Visa card and get $200 + $25 + 25 back ($250 total) after spending $500 at Amazon within 3 months. That amounts to a whopping 50% cash back on your first $500 of purchases, which should give you some extra cash to invest into your cryptocurrency addiction. =)

You can see how the deal breaks down by visiting the application page, but you’ll get $200 just for spending $500 in the first three months. You can make the purchases anywhere, but the card happens to earn you 5% cash back at Amazon this quarter, so that’s an additional $25. And you get an additional $25 when you add an authorized user to the card and they make their first purchase in 3 months.

You need to apply for the card by December 18th, but you have until mid-March to make the $500 in purchases. You can cancel the card without penalty after earning the rewards, of course.

Happy Bitcoin Black Friday!

Today is Bitcoin Black Friday, and that means there are some good deals to be had for shoppers using bitcoin to pay for their purchases. Remember that the long-term success of cryptocurrency depends on consumers that are willing to spend their coins—so consider making at least one purchase today in support of Bitcoin’s future.

Also, a reminder that Coinbase is waiving all fees today.

Update: Mt. Gox has now also announced that they’re waiving all fees today through Monday.

Coinbase waiving all fees this Friday

Coinbase today announced that they’ll be waiving all fees on 11/29 in celebration of Bitcoin Black Friday. If you’ve been wanting to buy, sell, or trade bitcoin, it won’t cost you a Satoshi at Coinbase this Friday.

Coinbase is probably one of the more reliable and trustworthy exchanges available at the moment, if you’re not familiar with them. You can sign up here through my referral link if you don’t already have an account, and we’ll both get $5 worth of free bitcoin after your first 1 BTC transaction.

PSA: Amazon Prime is awesome, free for 30 days

Amazon PrimeFor those of you ordering mining rig parts from Amazon, you can get yourself a free 30 day trial of Amazon Prime, which entitles you to free 2-day shipping (and a host of other benefits, including a streaming video library that is on par with Netflix’s service). You can cancel your Prime trial immediately after signing up, but you’ll still retain all of the benefits for the full 30 days—which is nice, since we’re heading into the holiday shopping season where that free fast shipping will come in handy!

1000 watt gold-rated modular power supply for $125 after rebate at Amazon

Amazon currently has an excellent deal on a Cooler Master 1000 watt gold-certified fully modular power supply. It’s $125 after a $30 mail-in rebate, which makes it about $75 cheaper than its normal price (new units on eBay typically sell for nearly $200). This PSU is reportedly a re-badged Seasonic and should have no problem providing efficient power to a rig with four undervolted 7950 GPUs (or three full-voltage cards).

Update: Looks like the deal has ended. The rebate is still available, but Amazon has raised the price back to its normal level. Hopefully some of you were able to snag one!

Update: The deal is still valid, although it looks like it’s been pretty popular, with shipping estimates in the 1-2 month range.

Sapphire 7970 GPU $299 after rebate at Amazon

Amazon is currently selling Sapphire 7970 video cards for about the same price as a 7950—$299 after a $20 rebate. While I generally don’t recommend Radeon 7970 GPUs as my top choice for mining due to their higher power consumption and up-front cost compared to the 7950, if you have abnormally cheap electricity or plan to also use your GPUs for other purposes (e.g.: gaming), then this is good deal.

CyberPower 900W Intelligent UPS deal at Amazon

If any of you are looking for a quality UPS & surge protector for your mining rigs, Amazon currently has a deal on a 900 watt CyberPower unit. 900 watts is plenty for a three GPU rig and will give you enough time to cleanly shut down your rig in the event of an outage (the unit is capable of performing the shutdown automatically in both Windows and Linux).

$115 with free shipping (or $95 if you have an Amazon Visa card & use promo code JUL20PER) is pretty much the lowest I’ve seen a 900 watt UPS from a reputable brand, so if you’re in the market this is a good opportunity to grab one!
